Anita Dube announced curator of 2018 Kochi Biennale

Kochi Biennale announced Anita Dube as curator for the 2018 edition of the now global art extravaganza. Anita, born 1958, is an Indian contemporary artist whose works are considered conceptually rich, and politically charged. Her practice is primarily based in sculpture but also includes photography, video, installation and performance. Born in Lucknow in 1958, she trained as a critic and historian in Baroda in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her works are powerful and make statements relevant and conscious to the pulse of opinion. She even turned to making art works informed by memories, history, mythology and phenomenological experience.

Bose Spacia in New York said of her works, "Anita Dube's sculptures and photographs straddle the often nebulous line between conceptual and artisanal productions; between the cerebral and visceral."

Anita's work has been widely exhibited in India at major museums and galleries, Lakeeren Gallery, Mumbai including the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (New Delhi); the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum (Mumbai); Gallery Nature Morte (New Delhi), KHOJ International Artists' Association (New Delhi).

She is known to experiment with her work, with bold forms and sublime ideas and thoughts. We at SheThePeople particularly love her work with words as a manifestation of art form. Her practice has evolved with strong materials. An example would be the copper and enamel eyes used or her experiments with recycled materials. She has become increasingly interested in using and playing with language and texts as her subjects.

Philippe Vergne, in a 2003 essay, writes that Dube's work "privileges sculptural fragment as a cultural bearer of personal and social memories, history, mythologies and phenomenological experiences.”
