Amy Schumer Drops Out Of Barbie Movie
Comedian Amy Schumer has pulled out of Sony’s upcoming Barbie film because of scheduling conflicts. She signed on as the star of the film in December last year and her sister and her had also signed up to do a partial rewrite of the film.
Schumer told Variety that she will no longer be able to commit to the Barbie movie. “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”
The film is about what happens to Barbie after she is thrown out of Barbieland for not fitting in. She realises that the real world is far far away from being perfect, and that real beauty is on the inside.
After Schumer was announced for the movie, she was trolled on Twitter and Instagram for not ‘fitting’ the part.
And her response on Instagram was very powerful. “My deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand. I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice. It’s that kind of response that let’s you know something’s wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it,” she said.
A Sony spokesperson said that “we respect and support Amy’s decision”. The film is slated to be released on 29 June, 2018, and the merchandise line for the film has already gone into production.
Amy Schumer would have made a great real Barbie. Now we just have to wait and watch to see who will replace the comedian.
