A day after celebrating International Women’s Day, foreign media proved that the fact that a woman having a baby bump is more likely to make news that the content of her speech. This is what happened when Human Rights lawyer Amal Clooney delivered a powerful speech at the United Nations  to address one of the most pressing issues of contemporary times — genocide.

She said, “I am speaking to you, the Iraqi government, and to you, UN member states, when I ask: Why? Why has nothing been done?”

Amal represents victims of Islamic state rapes and kidnappings. She further warned all the states to not let the ISIS get away with genocide so easily.

But it seems her speech couldn’t overpower the fact that she was wearing a yellow dress and flaunting her baby bump.

The tabloid Mirror published the headline,

“Amal Clooney is a vision in yellow as she shows off hint of baby bump in chic dress.”

Entertainment Tonight went with,

“Amal Clooney Stuns in Yellow While Delivering Passionate Speech at the United Nations.”

E!News wrote,

“Amal Clooney Shows Baby Bump in What Could be the Ultimate International Women’s Day Poster.”

Clooney is a barrister for Doughty Street Chambers in London and represents clients before the International Criminal Court, the International Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights as well other domestic courts in Britain and the United States. Overlooking the stellar work that she has been doing, some newspapers even mentioned that she is the wife of celebrity George Clooney. These references prove that it will take a lot of time for women to establish their own identity that ks devoid of their relation with men.

This was followed by a bunch of rational people turning to Twitter to vent out their anger at media’s cavalier attitude.

It is disheartening to know that a woman’s intellect is often brushed aside to make way for what some people feel is more relevant.
