15-Year-Old Divya Dhayal Clinches Bronze At Archery World Cup
Divya Dhayal from Pune, along with Abhishek Verma, won the bronze medal in the compound mixed event at the Archery World Cup, Stage II. The tournament — held at Antalya, Turkey — concluded on Saturday (June 10).
Dhayal and Verma were in one team and beat Italy’s Marcella Tonioli and Sergio Pagni by 154-153 in four sets. This was 15-year-old Dhayal’s second time in the World Cup. She showed passion and confidence throughout the tournament even when the Indian team was ahead by one point after two ends.
However, the Italians put up a neck-to-neck game as they not only recovered but went one point up in the third end. But the Indian team had the last laugh as it won by one point since both the teams scored 39 in the fourth and final end.
The Indian women’s compound team comprised Dhayal, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Snehal Mandhare which lost in the morning session by 222-227 in the bronze medal tie to the Italian trio of Marcella Tonioli, Irene Franchini and Viviana Spano.
The team led by two points at the first and second end by 56-54 lead and 112-110 with consistent shootings. But they suffered a major blow of 8 and 7 in a terrible third end of 54 and let Marcella Tonioli, Irene Franchini and Viviana Spano take a crucial 166-168 lead and eventually win the match.
Pune girl Dhayal is a student of Army Public School. She became the national archery champion by winning the 37th Senior National Archery Championship in March, this year. The tournament was held in Faridabad, Haryana. In the tournament, she won gold medals in both compound category and mixed team category.
The men’s compound team of Abhishek Verma, Chinna Raju Srither and Gurwinder Singh also finished fourth. They lost the bronze medal payoff against France by 227-228.
