Impressed by the success of the Bibipur model of women empowerment and village development, President Pranab Mukherjee has decided to implement the same in 100 villages of Haryana adopted by him. The model attempts to eradicate gender inequality by naming houses and streets after daughters.

According to Indian Express, the credit of this achievement goes to Sunil Jaglan, sarpanch of Bibipur in Hisar district, who is responsible for the ‘Selfie with Daughter’ concept. He is an ardent believer of the fact that women’s empowerment can accelerate rural development.

Jaglan has played a pivotal role in ameliorating the lives of a lot of villagers. His efforts received recognition when he brought together leaders of over 100 khaps on to one platform and resolved to combat female foeticide. He also endeavoured to rope in more and more women in the decision-making process of the village by asking them to attend meetings of women gram sabhas.

He also made some crucial decisions during his tenure as sarpanch. Under his leadership, it was decided that the women gram sabha would shell out 50 per cent funds it receives from the government for developmental activities. Villagers applauded this measure for its intention of helping villagers dismantle their archaic mindset.

His achievements do not end here. During 2012-2015, the village panchayat, headed by Jaglan, won awards worth over Rs 1.25 crore. The village won Rs 1 crore award from the state government in 2012 and Rs 10 lakh award from the Centre in 2013 for the effective launch of Save the Girl Child Campaign in 2012.

It is heartening to see men like Jaglan working hard in the direction of empowering rural women.
